El año 2018 marca el 50 aniversario de The Warren Center y el 25 aniversario de Fantasy Football Draft Night . En este evento, los asistentes crean sus propios equipos de fútbol de fantasía y compiten entre sí con la esperanza de ganar el gran premio; dos boletos de temporada para los Dallas Cowboys.
“Creo que la belleza de esto es que el evento continúa durante meses porque comparas puntajes al final de cada semana. Es solo una competencia divertida”. dijo Beverly Warren, copresidenta del Consejo Asesor del Centro Warren y miembro del comité de Fantasy Football.
Hace veinticinco años, Beverly se inspiró en una liga de fútbol de oficina en la que participaba su esposo y presidente de la Junta Directiva del Centro Warren, Bill Warren.
“La liga de fútbol de la oficina de Bill estaba formada por muchachos con los que trabajaba antes de la temporada de fútbol profesional y, en papel, equipos de redacción”, dijo Beverly.
Los empleados pusieron una cierta cantidad de dinero en el bote para jugar y una vez finalizada la temporada, el empleado cuyo equipo ganó Fantasy Football también ganó el bote.
“Pensé que esto era realmente interesante. Así que hablé con nuestra junta y decidimos aplicar esta misma estrategia para crear un evento de recaudación de fondos para The Warren Center”, dijo Beverly.

Desde entonces, el evento ha pasado de ser un grupo de amigos en una pequeña reunión informal a varios cientos en el antiguo Dallas Cowboy Stadium y ahora a 500 asistentes en The Westin Galleria Hotel.
“Bill y yo invitamos a varias personas a sentarse en nuestra mesa ese primer evento de Fantasy Football. Creo que cada uno de ellos se ha ido a comprar sus propias mesas. Se han unido a nuestras juntas y comités y realmente se han convertido en defensores del Centro”, dijo Beverly. “Es genial verlos participar porque aman The Warren Center y aman lo que los terapeutas hacen por los niños y las familias en el condado de Dallas”.

Para Beverly y su esposo Bill, fue su propia experiencia personal con The Warren Center lo que los llevó a involucrarse con la organización sin fines de lucro hace muchos años.
“Bueno, el evento es especial para nosotros, pero es el Centro Warren el que es tan especial para mí y mi familia. Cuando nuestro hijo, John, nació hace 32 años, nació con una discapacidad física muy pronunciada. Su síndrome [enfermedad Mutli-minicore] no fue diagnosticado hasta que cumplió 18 años”, dijo Beverly. “Bill y yo estábamos decididos a hacer algo para ayudar a nuestro hijo. Ningún médico en la ciudad había ofrecido ayuda real sobre cómo llevarlo a su mejor potencial”.
Finalmente, un médico del Children's Hospital recomendó que llamaran al Centro Warren, conocido entonces como el Centro de Desarrollo Richardson.
Beverly y Bill siguieron la recomendación del médico y llamaron al Centro Warren. Después de un par de días, Liz Francis, ex terapeuta del Centro Warren, visitó su casa para una evaluación inicial.
“Dentro de una semana estaba recibiendo terapia en The Warren Center”, dijo Beverly. “Ahora tiene 32 años. Tiene un MBA. Él está casado. Está trabajando en Los Ángeles y debemos gran parte de su éxito a los servicios prestados en The Warren Center. Los hemos estado apoyando desde entonces”.
Si bien algunas cosas sobre Fantasy Football Draft Night han cambiado a lo largo de los años, su propósito sigue siendo el mismo: recaudar fondos para ayudar a The Warren Center a continuar defendiendo, sirviendo y empoderando a los niños y familias afectados por discapacidades y retrasos en el desarrollo.
